Lizard 1 v Porthleven Rangers 8

This week Rangers travelled out east to the Lizard in search of a much needed win and this time came away with the all the points.
This game started with a bang when within a couple of minutes Rangers goal machine TT Hichens broke free avoiding the offside trap for once and slotted passed the keeper with ease. Lizard with the wind at their backs for the next fifteen minutes had a period of pressure but never really threatened. On several occasions Rangers broke forward but seemly couldn't break the off side trap. Then from one of these breaks Hichens again broke free but on this occasion the keeper won out but Two scoops Leach was on hand to slot home the loose ball. Again Lizard pushed forward and again Rangers broke this time it was the turn of Tax dodger Mark Pollard to beat the Keeper and just to prove it was no fluke he did the same thing five minutes later for his second and Rangers fourth.
The only down side for Rangers in the first half was the loss of young to Tall Eastwood who had to be substituted after coming down with a very nasty belly ache. He was a good boy though and didn't cry about it to much.

The Second half saw Rangers with the wind and made one more change at half time with two scoops being removed and stalwart pensioner wortley being introduced. It was Lizard who started the half the quickest but again they failed to trouble the Rangers defence or Keeper Tiddles Pawley. Then after five minutes it was Hichens again who broke free seemingly now having to start his runs from in his own half and again slotted by the keeper for his second.
With Rangers now five up and looking like they could score for fun it was only ever going to be a one sided affair from here in. Dave let me play up front Brand, now playing up front was determined to get on the score sheet but it just wouldn't happen for him. Several times the front man found his way blocked to goal by defenders, keepers and his own two feet how he didn't score we will never know.
Then came several worrying moments for Rangers when Pensioner Wortley went down quickly followed by Mark tax dodger Pollard and then Keeper Pawley. With only the one eyed player manager Powell left to come on it was the old man Wortley who had to go and the old cyclops dropped in at the back.

With twenty minutes left to play it was now the turn of the wide players to get involved in the goal action. First Tom layzell pulled the trigger after turning several players in the box several times and firing home. This was soon followed by Young Josephine Bray who with locks flowing beat the keeper with a smart shin which I'm sure took a deflection of his Alice band on the way in. As if this was not enough a quick change in positions saw Dan oops I'm out of Petrol Thomas move out wide and with his first touch in his new roll he fired home for his virginal goal in junior football. How pleasing for the young man in just two seasons what a strike rate.
Now with Rangers eight up it was all over but Lizard had one last go at it and finally found away passed the Rangers defence and keeper Tiddles Pawley. This also led to the Rangers keeper having to be switched after hurting his shoulder again and Powell taking up the gloves, keeping a superb clean sheet in the process for his two minutes in nets.
Rangers ran out this game 8 - 1 and should have had more. In all honesty this was a one sided affair and Lizard must now go and lick their wounds and regroup for their next game.

Rangers will look to their next game on Wednesday at home to Falmouth Albion and will need to put their feet back firmly on the ground for that one.

Porthleven Rangers 2 v Camborne Park 2

This week Rangers entertained Camborne Park in another close encounter. This was always going to be a close run affair with both sides lying in mid table and Camborne with one eye still on a promotion slot.
Rangers welcomed back two players this week Dave Banned Brand after the FA had asked him to take a mid season break and Gavin dodgy Hair Perriton who returned from Helston again and dropped in at left back.

This as it turned out was a much sought after position and several players seemed oh so keen to recommend the young man for this key roll. With the team selected and positions allotted Rangers started the game slowly going into a strong breeze. The first half hour was a case of both sides cancelling each other out and neither side could get on top.
Thirty minutes in Camborne made the first break through after a ball broke out wide and the Left midfielder took on the first time shot which flew across the face of the goal and then curled in on the wind beating Tiddles Pawley at his far post. This sparked Camborne and they pushed on hard for the next few minutes and were unlucky not to go two up when the found away through the middle of the Rangers defence and again beat Tiddles. This time however the Flag came to the rescue after the Camborne forward had been to keen to get forward and had run offside.
With the half fast drawing to a close a magic moment from the dodgy hair one Perriton saw him miss hit a long range effort over the top of the Camborne keeper and into the top corner for the equaliser. This gives him two goals in two games not a bad strike rate.

The second half was more of the same and but now with the wind at theirs backs Rangers started to force the game a little more. Rangers were now seeing more of the possession and Camborne were forced to start any moves from deep in their own half. It was however a Rangers error which presented them with their second goal after The Hair lost the ball and the Camborne wide man drove into the box before squaring the ball to an open striker who slotted into an empty net. The flag again had gone up and over came the Ref for a chat and this time elected to allow the goal to stand.
Rangers now started to ring the changes and To Tall Eastwood, Dave tax dodger Pollard and a very thirsty Brum Willets were all introduced, with Sniff Bray, Pensioner Wortley, Dan I've got belly ache Thomas making way. These introductions gave Rangers a little more heart and desire and they pushed on looking for the equaliser. Then after a series of long throws and corners a header from The Tax Dodger thundered of the bar was nodded back in by Willets and before being finally help in by Jonny Ice Leach. Nice for the young man to hit the target this week and surrender his much coveted pink shirt.
Rangers were now on top and forced several more corners and long throws into the box but for all their efforts they couldn't find a way through. When the final whistle blew it was Rangers 2 Camborne Park 2 a result that really does neither side any good.
Next week Rangers travel to the Lizard and are already praying to the weather gods for a calmer day.

Finally all at Rangers wish Ryan Willets and his better half all the best for the future and thanks for your efforts.

Porthleven Rangers v Ruan Minor (Terry Jennings Cup)

This week Rangers entertained Ruan Minor in the Terry Jennings Cup starting the game as the under dogs having been beaten by Ruan twice in the league this season already.

This game started with both sides having to reshuffle their sides with several players missing Rangers brought young guns Sniff Bray and Scot to tall Eastwood into the team and they both gave their all to the cause this week.

The game eventually got under way after the Referee was satisfied that the lines were visible and not just a figment of everybody's imagination. This was always going to be a close run affair, if either of the previous games were anything to go by and that is exactly how it turned out. The early stages were a case of both sides spoiling each others play and neither team dominating. The Referee himself soon settled into the game and once he got to tired to blow up and fed up with calling players over for a chat the game started to flow. Rangers had the best of the play in the first half and created several chances to take the lead. Young Sniff Bray on two or three occasions managed to get beyond the defence and on one occasion he even managed to hit the target but couldn't beat the keeper. Shame about the complete air shot that followed later, enough said.

The first half ended with Rangers on top but the score line hadn't been troubled. Ruan had by now realised that they were not just going to turn up and roll Rangers over in this one.

The second half started as the first the had finished with Rangers on top and when early on front man Neal Cash Customer Bartlett managed to get past the keeper it looked like a goal would come but somehow the ball got stuck under his feet and the keeper grabbed the opportunity and the ball with both hands. This was followed by chances for Wortley, Hichens, Hughes and Hubbard but none could find the back of the net and when needed the Ruan keeper kept his side in it. Then on seventy minutes young Johnny Ice latched on to a back pass rounded the keeper and with just a defender on the line to beat he somehow managed to pull the ball wide of the near post. A moment to earn him the much coveted DOTD pink shirt for the second week running.

Then came that killer blow that was to settle the game for once and for all. A quick freekick a good one two and a magnificent toe punt into the bottom corner. Gooooooooal and what a goal, a heart breaking goal completely against the run of play but neither the less a goal. The only real shot on goal for the entire ninety minutes and yet somehow Ruan were one up. Rangers for all their efforts and attempts were now one down and with only ten to play.

Rangers continued to fight on but the clock was now against them and with time running out the goal gave Ruan fresh heart and fresh legs. Then came a real heart stopping moment as Ruan pushed forward light weight defender Steve Chips for Tea Wortley rushed out to challenge for a fifty fifty ball but as it turned sixty forty a full hearted challenge saw a clash of knees and the Ruan man go down clutching his leg. Everyone thought that he must surely have broken it from the noise he was making. This tackle brought Managers, Fans and players alike all into very close contact and for a minute or two this game could have turned ugly. However once the blood pressure and testosterone had fallen some sanity returned both players were helped of the pitch. The Referee produced a yellow for the Rangers light weight defender. There had however been more cynical challenges that had gone unpunished but some you win some you lose.

The Referee wasn't long in bringing the game to a close and blew up shortly after restarting the game. Ruan move on to the next round and Rangers must reflect on missed chances they can however take heart from the performance. Rangers had in all honesty had done more than enough to win this game and several Ruan players remarked on how they got out of jail in this one.

Porthleven Rangers 2 v Falmouth Albion 2

This week saw Rangers travel on an away day to Falmouth Albion. This was always going to be a tough fixture with Albion still having title and promotion on their minds.
After full use of the somewhat crude changing facilities the Rangers players only had to make the quick car journey to the pitch for the game to start. An away game at the away game. The pitch looked good for a game of football and as soon as the ref had finished marking it out play could begin. Not the best advert for a league which is supposed to be looking to improve standards. Not the Clubs fault this time I mean the School only wanted £90 a game for the pitch and its changing facilities, not a bad deal if you ask me. Not.....
Rangers line up as per usual saw several changes after three of the clubs stalwarts became unavailable. One of them decided he couldn't play because his better half had given birth and the Baby was coming home. What a pitiful excuse, he'll learn in a few weeks he will be begging to get out and play. Seriously congrats go to Tom Layzell and Donna on the birth of a potential Ranger.
Rangers started this game somewhat slowly and failed to score within the first two minutes. The last two games had seen the ball in the net before the sound of the Refs whistle had finished ringing in the ears. A solid start turned into a midfield battle and with TT Hichens and Ricky Williams giving as good as they got. Not a bad effort for a couple of old heads who had recovered well from their bout of dehydration on Friday evening.
Rangers new look team was working hard this week and ensuring that they played for each other and showed some spirit that had been lost in recent weeks. Then after 25 minutes a freekick on the edge of the box gave Rangers their first scare. With the wall formed and the line held a great strike looked like all the hard work was about to be undone. Keeper Tiddles Pawley however had other ideas and flew across his goal to make a finger tip save. Then on thirty Minutes Rangers were undone when a miss hit corner was flicked on and an unmarked Albion player pounced. This goal seemed to give Albion a lift and when Five minutes later a second corner brought about similar result. They though they had this game won before the half was up.
Rangers at half time needed to find in themselves some believe and had to focus on the fact that this game was not over yet. It had been an even contest and at times Rangers had played the better Football.
Albion started as if they thought this game was in the bag. Rangers however had the wind at their back and other ideas. Albions believe suddenly started to fade. Then after a corner the ball found its way to a wrong footed Rangers Pensioner Andy Wortley at the back stick but he was on his best side and neatly put it round the post. This did however serve warning of things to come and five minutes later another corner saw the ball fall to a sobering Hichens who volleyed home. Now Albion where rocking and Rangers spirit started to show its self big style. The Ref took acceptation to this and junior Wortley Bart found himself being shown something from the Refs pocket.
Albion now on the ropes started to just bang the ball forward and found A.N Other Wortley Steve a bit to big to get the ball over. He won header after header and proved to be a rock at the back all day. With Ten to go Player Manager Powell introduced himself to the game, with the Ginger Winger Ryan quite night in Hughes making way. After giving the keeper something to worry about from a cross he spilled the ball and it went for what was clearly a corner. The Albion Linesman must however have been unsighted (Blind) and gave nothing. The keeper found himself being questioned over the incident by the Spaniard and as the Red mist came down he promptly kick the ball straight at the somewhat disbelieving Manager and it flew straight back towards the goal with Powell in pursuit. The Ref however took a different view on proceeding and blew up stating that the player shouldn't have been stood their. Must be a new Rule this year, no player Shall be seen to stand on the field in front of the keeper whilst he kicks the ball at you.
With the clock now beginning to Run down Rangers pushed for the equaliser and when Bart Wortley found himself in front of the nets he didn't disappoint and fire the ball into the bottom corner. Albion by now were ready for the taking and Rangers pushed for the winner. It came so close when after another attack Rangers struck the bar when it looked like the goal was at their mercy. Then after a second long range effort from the pensioner struck the bar for a second time the ball fell to a young Johnny Ice who with the keeper scrambling missed what was a golden opportunity to snatch the win. A pink T-shirt moment and a one he wont forget for a while. To be fair the young man as with all the other Rangers players had worked their socks off. The Refs sundial by now appeared to find some light from somewhere and he finally blew up and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Albion may look at this game as three points lost. In truth they should consider their selves as lucky to have walked away with anything. Rangers may not be at the top of this league but make no mistake they will have a big say in who does go up this year. If they play with this same attitude and desire for the rest of this season then they will give every team a run for their money and you can bet Albion wont be looking forward to the return fixture in a few weeks time.

Porthleven Rangers 5 v Hayle 0

This week Rangers entertained a youthful looking Hayle side. Mind you next to some of the more senior Rangers players Tony Adams would look like a mere youngster.

Rangers started this game of with a real bang and after six touches of the ball the Hayle keeper found himself picking it out of his net. Rangers leading goal scorer TT Hichens was left adding one more to his total, soon he will need to take both shoes and socks off to keep count.

Rangers great start to this game continued and after a fine move down the right a great ball into the box saw Si Hubbard volley home into the old empty cupboard. This was without doubt the best move of the game and was no more than the Rangers dominance deserved. Hubbard was not done yet however and after another ten minutes with some vocal encouragement he clipped a ball over the top of a stranded keeper from 25 yards to put Rangers 3 up and in full control.

The Rangers back line of Willets,Wortley, Williams and Wortley (WWWW.COM)throughout the half gave the Hayle front-line a torrid time and Young Keeper the Third Wortley had very little work to do. At one point the young man was seen swinging around his post like a monkey after one of Hayles more accurate efforts sailed wide of its mark.

The second half saw Rangers shuffle the pack again and added some more youth into the back line with player manager The Spaniard L Powell introduced. Ryan Hammy Willets moved up into mid field and added some more weight to the centre of the park. All this was brought about after losing Ricky Williams with a pulled muscle. Well, what do you expect when you playing socks that tight something was bound to give.

Hayle now with the wind at their backs pushed on looking for a goal to get them back into the game. They gave all they had but when it came to the final third their young heads just seemed to get the better of them. If only they had followed in a couple of long range efforts they would have had two or three good chance to score. The Rangers Keeper young Bubbles Wortley was seen to spill the ball on several occasions it was like he was trying to catch Bananas.

When Rangers frontman Cash Customer Bartlett drove a strike across the keeper for his first twenty minutes in, it was all over as a contest. It was no more than his play deserved and most have been nice for the him to have a drive, while he still can.
Hayle continued to give all they could and on one occasion they did manage to get in behind the Rangers defence but Bubbles was quick of his line and bravely dived in at the strikers feet to pull of a great stop. This was to be Hayles last real effort and when Bartlett turned his man and fired into the roof of the net with just ten left on the clock there was no way back for Hayle.

This contest was a case of Boys against Men and the Hayle youngsters for all their efforts were never really in it. Rangers older heads had never really been troubled and when the final whistle blew it was a comfortable three points with the score line reading 5-0.

Next week Rangers travel to Stithians and will need to continue to take all the points to pull themselves back up the table.

Lanner 2 - Porthleven Rangers 1

This week Rangers travelled to Lanner in search of a much needed win. The home side however had other ideas and Rangers were to come away empty handed.

Rangers saw the return of Ricky my leg my leg Williams into the side after a braking his leg before christmas and the Ginger Winger Ryan I missed my left to Plymouth Hughes getting his first start this season. Rangers again started brightly but did not make the most of their early opportunities and the Lanner keeper was never really tested. As the half went on it was Lanner who began to take control and Rangers Keeper the Third Wortley Bart was being called into action all to often. After conceding a needless corner Rangers were punished when they failed to clear the ball from out of the mud puddle in front of their goal and a Lanner player was first to react and fire home.

With time going by it was Lanner who were moving the ball around all to well and it was no surprise when they scored their second. It was however a surprise to the young Rangers Keeper, who wished he was a few inches taller like the Rangers Linesman when the ball arced over him and into the net from outside the box. To be fair he had by now kept Rangers in a game in which they were second best.

At the half Rangers made one or two tweaks to the shape. Cold legs Williams was asked to do a man on man job with the Lanner play maker Goldie and Mid field pair of Tom my daddy has come to see me Layzell and the Old Mother Hubbard switched roles.
Rangers with a new shape took the game to Lanner in the second half and the changes worked well. Cold legs followed his man where ever he went and this and the other changes helped to stop the Lanner flow.

Rangers were now applying the pressure and when Ricky my leg my leg Williams drove in a superb free kick it was Veteran Andy pensioner Wortley who climbed highest but saw his thunderous header pass by the far post. Then Daddies boy Layzell was up ended in the box for what looked like a stick on penalty but the ref waved play on. He did however then allow the magic sponge onto the pitch to treat the injured Layzell who's shin was still throbbing from the errant defenders kick. The pressure did finally pay off when after some good flowing football a corner was headed home by an unmarked Layzell. This was no more than Rangers deserved and brought them right back into the game.

Lanner did create one or two chances but Keeper Wortley was still on fine form and pulled of two more great saves in the second half. This even brought praise from the lanner bench and management something we need to address in the english game. How can we keep these young players feet on the ground with this kind of encouragement its a disgrace. His poor old old old man Andy will have to suffer all week now with his inflated ego.

With time ticking by Rangers made there final change and the Ginger One was withdrawn, after having done a good job in the second half of shutting out his man. His best game for Rangers in some time and all on top of a late night out and steak for breakfast.

As the game drew to a close it was all Rangers, throwing everything at the Lanner defence looking for the equaliser. This time however it was not to be and when the whistle blew it was Lanner who took all the points.

The final words must go to both sides for what was a great advert for league three football, the referee who did a great job and admitted had thoroughly enjoyed the game. Finally to young Bart Wortley who was superb between the sticks and was by far the man of the match. Well played mate.

Next week Rangers entertain Hayle and most get back to winning ways to halt their slide towards mid table mediocrity.

Mullion 1 v Porthleven Rangers 0

This week Rangers travelled to local rivals Mullion for an eagerly awaited Derby Game. This match was always going to be a close encounter with both sides looking for the vital 3 points. Rangers travelling support was a little light this week when the Nauti One was layed up at home with a bad back and his england rugby shirt at the ready, egg chasing on a saturday disgrace.

The game didn't start well for Rangers when before a ball was even kicked centre half Brum Willets declared himself out after tweaking a groin whilst getting dressed. This led to a reshuffle of the side and saw the veteran player manager L Powell the spaniard getting a rare start.

With a strong sea breeze blowing end to end and the sun casting long shadows over the Mullion field Rangers opted to play with the wind in the first half. After watching Mullion knocking the ball around and playing some lovely little triangles for the first few minutes Rangers finally awoke and started about the task. When Neal U O A Dozen English Bartlett went through on goal it looked like the break through but he lifted the ball over the advancing Keeper and wide of the mark. Then after a lovely move which included a touch of the continental or back heel saw a great strike from TT Hichens into the top corner but the keeper at full stretch pulled of a fine save.

As the half wore on Rangers for all there efforts could not find that all important break through. With the Mullions Linesman's arm getting a good work out the Rangers front line just couldn't seem to beat the trap. Then just when it looked as if the half would finish goalless a break down the Rangers left a ball into the box, to what looked like three players stood offside saw a great last ditched effort at the back stick by Bouncer Dan Thomas to score his first for the Club unfortunately that club was Mullion. The referee was its fair to say not quite up with play and the Rangers defence were somewhat bewildered as to why the flag had not gone up but hay when you look at the score sheet it still reads Thomas OG.

With just a few minutes left on the clock Rangers tried desperately to get back on level terms but it was not to be. Mullion however still had one more crack at goal, when their front man was slid in it looked like he would make it 2 but Rangers Keeper Bart the younger Wortley pulled of a fine save touching the ball onto the post before retrieving it.

The second half saw Rangers playing into an ever stiffening sea breeze and it looked like it could be a tough one to pull out of the fire. With the wind at their backs Mullion did start to push hard but the Rangers defence refused to crack. The older heads of Rangers did have one or two things to say for themselves and on a couple of occasions the ref interceded and with some strong words of his own. Never been to sure on the foul and abuse language rules but you just cant give yourself a card these days.

Mullion were now dominating the field position but to be honest for all their possession and bluster never really looked like they could break down a stubborn Rangers defence. With Rangers being forced to play on the break chances were few and far between but the Mullion keeper was called into action on a couple of occasions and was always quick of his line when he needed to be, twice taking the ball at the feet of the Rangers forwards.

The game was by now not the best by a long way and both sides were guilty of giving the ball away all to often. Then one of the games darkest moments took place when Dan OG Thomas was booked by the Referee after a very ugly Totting followed by a very nasty shake of his head, after he was stalked by the referee like a great white hunter on the sent of his prey. All this brought about after a delayed dive sent the young Thomas to the floor after being caught on the ankle by a mullion player just 5 or 6 seconds earlier. The Ref had no option but to show him who was boss sorry I mean a card. That kind of Totting and Head Shaking has no place on the field and should be saved until after the water shed at least. A complete disgrace and I'm sure the club will be looking to take action of there own, perhaps a neck brace or collar for the young man.

With time now nearly out Rangers changed their shape for one last effort and shifted young Jonny Ice out right brought the Old Mother Hubbard into the middle and pushed leading scorer TT Hichens back up top. This change did seem to give Rangers a little more time with the ball and when Young Ice was brought down outside the box with a late and high challenge. Which brought the Refs cards out again. This time being used for what they were designed. With the wall almost the full six yards back and encroaching by the second Twelve pounds Bartlett took on the shot cleared the bar and Mullion survived again.

When the final whistle went Mullion had the points and I should think they were more than pleased with themselves for it. Rangers can look back on missed opportunities in the first half . The Ref can go back to playing 6 aside and can look back on what was probably not his finest game.

Next Saturday Rangers entertain Mullion in the reverse fixture (How does the this fixturing work I'll never know) at Porthlevens Gala Park. This may not be a game for the faint hearted with both sides still with all to play for and with dented prides to mend.

Porthleven Rangers 0 v Frogpool/Cusgarne 0

This week Rangers entertained the two teams Frogpool & Cuscarne in what was a chilling encounter. The conditions didn't help to make this the best of games with a strong and cold wind blowing across an exposed field but it was a real nail biter for both sides.

Rangers started this game with the managers words ringing in their ears about commitment and attitude and they responded well and started about the opposition with some gusto. It was Rangers who dominated the early play and with the wind in their favour pushed Frogpool back. With the best of the chances going Rangers way it looked like it was a matter of time before they would score.

The middle of the park in this contest was not for the faint hearted and with both sets of players giving as good as they got. With Frogpool playing with five in the middle the Rangers four had their work cut out but responded to the challenge in great style. When the Rangers front line of TT Hichens and Ice Leach did get on the ball they found the keeper in good form and he made a couple of saves early on. When the keeper was beaten on two occasions the ball was cleared of the line and when it missed them it struck the post. This appeared to be one of those days when nothing would go in and no matter how much Rangers dominated there was always that chance of a counter attack.

When Frogpool did at one point break on Rangers a free kick was conceded five yards from the edge of the box. As the Rangers players walked away Frogpool went early and when a shot struck a defender the ball went for a corner.

This interlude allowed words to be exchanged between Linesman and Referee reference his pre game chat about slowing it down in and around the box, taking the ten yards and playing the whistle.

The Referee by now was not exactly enamoured with proceedings up to now, was in no mood to talk. The resultant corner saw keeper Wortley come and claim under pressure and have a feel of the post with the back of his bonce. This was as close as Frogpool came to scoring in the half and even that had ended in a free kick. Rangers back line of Thomas, Willets, Wortley and Williams never looked like conceding and with Pensioner Wortley taking charge and using his many, many, many years of experience it would be a long day for the Frogpool forwards.

The second half again started brightly for Rangers and with several early chances going missing. Then as things started to look good disaster struck when Rangers mid fielder Dave take me off Brand was taken down from behind. The Ref however didn't see it as a foul and awarded a throw in. Both sets of managers agreed it was a foul, all the players knew it was a foul, but the Ref makes the decisions. This did lead to a confrontation between player and Ref it was not exactly the first confrontation. The Ref had about enough by now and would have the last word and finally produced a Red card. Fair call to be honest and no one could argue with the Red but the initial decision for a throw in was not his best of the day.

Rangers now down to Ten men and playing into the breeze and with nearly 40 minutes to go would surely struggle. Frogpool failed to make any changes in formation even when Rangers adjusted to just one up top. Yet still it was Rangers that created chances and when TT went through on goal it looked like glory beckoned, but the clubs top scorer knocked the ball wide of the mark when it appeared easier to score. This was followed by chances for Steve Wortley, Jonny Leach, and Si Hubbard none of which found the mark and the keeper again kept his side in it. The Frogpool bench was not exactly a happy place to be at this time and several players received some very stern words, of shall we call it, encouragement.

With time starting to run out Rangers still refused to buckle and as Frogpool press they countered time and time again all of which was starting to take its toll on the legs. When centre half Ryan Hammy Willets decided he was to tired to go on, he pulled up with his usual hamstring some would say no change there. This led to the introduction of another pensioner into the back four when player manager Powell was forced to play. Now with another old head at the back time running out and everyone digging into their reserves it was going to be hard Frogpool to find a way through.

Frogpool did start to press hard and Rangers now very tired started to drop a little to deep. The final few minutes were nearly all played in the Rangers half but apart from one good save from Wortley Junior in goal Frogpool never looked likely to score. When the final whistle blew both sides were happy to have escaped with a point. Rangers should, could, and maybe deserved more out of this one but it was not to be. They did however find some spirit and a desire that has been missing for several weeks and even with Ten men still appeared the better side.

Next week Rangers travel to play Camborne Park in what could again prove a real test.

Porthleven Rangers 3 v Carharrack

This week Rangers entertained the leagues bottom side Carharrack and came away with all the points after a blustery game.

Rangers welcomed back a couple of old faces to the side, when long term injured players Neal Jaffa Bartlett, Pension book Andy Wortley and even the ginger winger Ryan Hughes all returned to the playing field.

This was always going to be a game of two half's with a strong breeze blowing end to end across a very exposed field. Instructions for the skipper to take the wind if given the chance allowed Rangers to play with three up top and three at the back for the first half.

Rangers dominated the first half and were never really tested at the back. Neal Bartlett put Rangers one up after a fine piece of individual skill and with one of his best scuffed shots found the bottom corner of the net. This was soon followed by the young Jonny Ice Cool Leach who having lifted the ball over the advancing keeper latched on again and scored into an empty net. If that wasn't enough after a marauding Old mother Hubbard went clean through the defence and was brought down in the box. Up stepped TT Hichens to slot home the resultant penalty, allegedly after fainting left then right and finally dipping a shoulder so he says.

It is fair to say however that Rangers should have put this game well and truly to bed before the half time whistle blow. This however was not the case with several chances going begging and with a very effective offside trap catching player after player offside. With two or three clear breaks called back for what appeared to be very quick flags the gap was not as big as it should have been when the whistle went.

The second half was always going to be tough into the wind. It was Rangers who created the first real opportunity and when front man Bartlett beat the trap and the keeper, it was not to be and the wind carried the ball outside the post, with the whole park watching and thinking it must surely have gone in.

Carharrack did now finally start to press and with the wind at their backs gained a foot hold in the game. Rangers sometimes being a little over confident on the ball did create some of their own trouble but it was an error from Rangers Keeper Tiddles Pawley that led to Carharracks first goal. Caught in two minds whether to come or not he finally elected to come and the forward gratefully lifted the ball into an unguarded net.

Rangers seemed to have replied almost straight away after Jonny Ice and TT combined for what seemed a clear goal. With TT running from behind a defender and having the ball laid back to him by Jonny he slotted home with ease. The Ref blow up and several players started to make their way back to the centre spot, the Linesman and Referee had other ideas though and a free kick was awarded for off side.

Carharrack having survived that incident pressed again and when Tiddles was beaten for a second time the ball was cleared of the line by the Pension Book himself Andy Wortley. This scramble lifted the away side and when Rangers got caught in possession deep in their own half a gleeful forward knock a ball passed the advancing keeper to make it 3 - 2. With time now virtually up however it was a mere consolation goal and when the whistle did finally blow it was Rangers 3 Carharrack 2.

This was a good performance by the bottom side and showed that when given some believe they could prove to be a handful for several sides yet. Rangers will be happy to have taken the points and kept themselves in the mix for this years promotion contest. They will however need to raise their game if they intend to remain in that hunt come the end of the season.

Porthleven Rangers 5 - Cury 4

OG Saves Rangers Blushes!

Before I start my ramblings this week I must clear up one point from last week that appears to have got me in trouble with the League committee. I offer my apologies to anyone called Wayne Quinn who was not playing for Hayle last weekend I didn't mean to offend you. Still its nice to know that some Committee members read the reports and judging by the feed back I receive plenty of other people do as well. The light hearted approach we take seems to keep them amused, if not those on the Committee.

Now down to the not so serious stuff. This week Rangers entertained Cury in a local derby match, seeking for revenge after beating them 6 - 0 earlier in the season and having the points deducted for a clerical error.

This week was clearly a famine week for the selectors and with only 13 available players Rangers were forced to make changes in last weeks winning side. The game started poorly for Rangers and it looked to all like a real Div 3 contest, something more akin to the school play ground than a football league. It was no surprise when the first goal came Curys way after some poor Rangers defending and to be fair, although they had been on the back foot Cury did look the more likely to score. After this goal however Rangers seemed to wake up to the fact, that this would be no stroll in the park and started to knuckle down. Within Ten minutes they pulled level after a corner wasn't cleared and a quick toe poke from Dave Tax dodger Pollard found the net.

With a semblance of control now applied to the came Rangers entered into a period of dominance and when Tom Layzell skipped by his brother and tried to cross into the box a Cury defender was seen to do a star jump and blocked the ball with his arm. To no ones surprise other than the Cury skipper and the defender the whistle blew for a penalty. Up stepped young Iceman Jonny Leach who with the aid of his very fancy sweat top, sorry personalised sweat top coolly slotted home. This was soon followed by a third when the young man now positively chilled beat the keeper on a one on one chance that never looked in doubt. He, may be cool but the teams top scorer Nicholas Hichens is starting to sweat the golden Boot race is back on.

As the half went on Rangers were forced into more changes when Brum Willets was forced to retire after pulling a hamstring. The poor things aren't designed to carry that amount of weight, who knows what could happen after the Turkey season is through. With the big Tax dodger enlisted into the defence the whistle blew for half time with Rangers 3-1 to the good.

The second half was barely 5 minutes old when Rangers scored their fourth, again the result of a corner and this time however it was Tom pay your subs Layzell who benefited from some poor defending and shot home.

With Rangers now 4 - 1 up the game should have been dead and buried but there followed a mad ten minutes that saw Cury pull level. First a poor tackle on the edge of the box saw a free kick spooned by the Rangers Keeper and slotted home. This was then followed by a spilled ball after a poor shot and a third Cury goal. Life's tough as a keeper as soon as you start thinking and stop reacting your in trouble. The final nail came when a well struck clearance hit a Cury player full on and broke into his path and he slotted home. From 4-1 to 4-4 in ten minutes madness, Rangers players deflated and Cury players elated.

Rangers after raising themselves did now start to press Cury and with several good chances to score they started to dominate again. The Cury keeper was however living a charmed and brave life and was proving difficult to beat. After making several brave stops, seeing the ball cleared of the line no less than three times the cross bar struck as well, surely it was a matter of time, for a Rangers fifth.

The final twist in this game came from yet another corner which was well delivered into the box and a solid header from Layzell found the back of the net with the keeper stranded. The only problem being that this time it was James Layzell from Cury and his own net. At this stage Rangers were more than glad to except this early Christmas Present and at 5-4 up would not make the same mistakes as earlier. As the clock ticked down Rangers now had control of the game and never really looked likely to concede a fifth.

When the final whistle did blow it was a relief for Rangers and a gut wrench for Cury. This was a fair and honest contest from whistle to whistle it may have been school boy at times but it did entertain. Cury may feel robbed of a point but Rangers know that feeling ho so well having been their all last season. Unlucky boys and well played.

Next week Rangers entertain Ruan Minor who look like they intend to be in the running come the end of this season. Lets hope the conditions are good and we see a good game of football.
